Wooden Dresser Rehab

For the nursery I knew I wanted two “new” things.
New meaning not brand new, but new to me.
1. A white dresser
2. A Glider to rock the baby

I found a STEAL!

I had my mind set that I wanted to find a sturdy wooden dresser for less than $100. I was not going to spend more than that. I was going to wait until I found what I wanted. I looked at thrift stores, goodwill, and Facebook Marketplace. After about a month of searching, I found this dresser on Facebook Marketplace for $50!

One evening, I sent my husband out to go pick it up. The lady selling it said that it was heavy and he would need someone to help him lift it, so he brought a friend with him. They had quite the surprise for them when they arrived to pick up the dresser. Not only did the dresser weigh a ton, it was on the second floor & they had to carry it down the stairs! But they were troopers & I had pizza waiting for them at home when they arrived.

How to beautify the dresser:

Step 1: Clean the dresser & remove hardware

I wiped the whole thing down with a soapy rag to get rid of all the dust and grime. & removed the handles from the drawers.

Step 2: Choose a paint color

For the drawers & base, I used a pro-block primer as the white color (something I had sitting around the house left over from another project). It needed 3 coats of the pro block.

Step 3: Paint the hardware

I spray painted the hardware using a Silver Rust-oleum spray paint I got from the dollar general. I sprayed the hardware with 2 coats.

Step 4: Sand/Strip the top

I stripped the top using Citristrip Paint & Varnish Stripping Gel which I do not suggest doing unless you have to. This was time consuming, a mess, & gross! Stripping the varnish will be a last resort for the future for me.

Edit: I suggest using a sander or liquid sandpaper (extremely quick) instead of stripping it.

Step 5: Stain the top

I stained the top using Carbon Grey.

Step 6: Seal the entire piece

I sealed the dresser with a Matte Protective finish.
